CARDINAL VIRTUES

OVERVIEW

Moral Theology: The Cardinal Virtues

Prudence, Justice, Fortitude and Temperance

Moral Theology explores how faith shapes the way we live. It studies human actions in the light of the Gospel and helps us understand how our choices lead us toward our ultimate end: communion with God and true human happiness. Drawing from Sacred Scripture, the teachings of the Church, and the rich tradition of Christian thought, Moral Theology provides a framework for understanding the goodness of human actions and the path to authentic freedom.

At the heart of the moral life are the cardinal virtues—prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance—which form the foundation of good character and right action. These virtues help integrate reason, freedom, and human emotions so that a person can consistently choose what is good. This course explores the development of the idea of virtue from classical philosophy to Christian teaching and shows how the virtues enable us to grow in maturity, responsibility, and holiness in everyday life.
